Knowledge Organisers:

Knowledge Organisers provide the core knowledge from our curriculum that the students are required to know to meet curriculum expectations. They are an excellent resource to use for revision in preparation for assessments or examinations.

Curriculum Information:

In an increasingly technological and scientific world, the ability to be fluent with number as well as developing problem-solving skills and analytical skills has never been more important.  Ultimately, the ability to solve problems, whether in a real-life context or more unfamiliar circumstances, is why mathematics is so important to the world we live in. 

At first glance, mathematics can appear an enormous collection of completely unrelated facts and techniques, but through well planned and fluent teaching students can start to spot patterns, discover for themselves similarities in apparently distinct and unrelated topics leading to an understanding of how to use these connections to solve new and challenging problems.  This breeds excitement and enjoyment in learning and is what every maths teacher will strive to achieve. 

Having a deep understanding of previous work and being able to retrieve prior knowledge is key to learning new content and plays a big part in any maths lesson. Rather than purely focusing on an answer, a lesson will develop the thinking and understanding needed to get to the answer, giving students the tools to be able to answer more challenging and unfamiliar questions. This will often lead to intrigue from students who will then look forward to their next maths lessons. 

Schemes of work have been adapted and developed to enable staff to teach in this way, using resources linked to national schemes used by many local primary schools. This in turn also helps with the transition from years 6 to 7. Support work and extension work is frequently added and adapted to ensure there is suitable content for all students no matter their mathematical ability.  

Above all else we strive for students to enjoy mathematics, enjoying the challenges it brings whilst understanding its importance and relevance in the modern world – real world problems will frequently be introduced in lessons. 

We are fortunate to have eleven fully qualified mathematicians teaching at Corsham, all working in specialist rooms with interactive boards enabling teaching to be exciting, varied, and purposeful to help stimulate moments of wonder and enable students of all abilities to have their own flashes of insight and inspiration.
