The main aim of the department is for students to have an active involvement in many different forms of music making to enable students to enjoy creating, performing and listening to music. We believe that music is a subject that is accessible to all, providing opportunities for success at all levels of ability.
We develop the three main skills areas (performing, composing, listening) through individual, paired, group and whole class activities using a variety of resources such as electronic keyboards, guitars, small percussion, African drums and of course the human voice! We also make regular use of iPads in lessons for students to perform & compose music using Garage Band.
Music is compulsory for Years 7, 8 and 9 and is taught in mixed ability groups. It is an option for KS4 pupils to take RSL Music and students can specialise in music performance or music technology. At KS5 students can study a Level 3 BTEC in Music Technology and also have the opportunity to complete coursework at Real World Studios.
We encourage students to participate in one of the many extra-curricular activities that we offer. These range from flute & clarinet group, pop music group, guitar club, choir and jazz group. Students are also able to make use of our classrooms and practise rooms at lunch time to rehearse in their own groups if they wish.
Every year we hold regular concerts during the Christmas, Spring and Summer terms. Previously we have also arranged a creative festival (HayFest: July 2016) to celebrate music, drama and art and usually hold an annual school production that combines music, drama and dance. We have produced Bugsy Malone (Feb 2017), Oliver! (Feb 2018) and Little Shop of Horrors (July 2019).
Students can also learn to play an instrument with one of our many peripatetic teachers. Lessons are available on piano, keyboard, voice, flute, guitar, ukulele, drums, strings and brass. There is some subsidy available from the council to assist with the cost of lessons for pupil premium and SEN students and some instruments are available to hire from Wiltshire Council.
