Post-16 Pathways

Leaving Year 11 is an exciting milestone and marks the start of the next stage of your journey. There are many different pathways available and no single route is right for everyone.

At The Corsham School, we are committed to providing impartial careers information, advice and guidance to help students and parents/carers make informed decisions about the future. Whether you are considering sixth form, college, an apprenticeship, a training provider or another route, our aim is to help you find the pathway that best matches your interests, strengths and ambitions.

Not Sure What to Choose?

If you're unsure which pathway might be right for you, start by thinking about:

  • Do I enjoy academic or practical learning?
  • Do I know what career areas interest me?
  • Would I like to continue studying full-time?
  • Would I like to earn while I learn?
  • What qualifications do I need for my future goals?
  • How do I learn best?

Remember, most careers can be reached through more than one route. There is rarely only one pathway to a particular career or destination. The important thing is choosing a route that suits you and keeps your future options open.

Understanding Post-16 Pathways

Students in England are required to remain in education, employment or training until they are 18. However, there are several different ways to achieve this.

Many students move between different routes during their education and career. For example, students can progress from an apprenticeship to university or from a vocational course to higher education.

Exploring Your Options in More Detail

Sixth Form

Sixth forms typically offer A Level qualifications and provide a familiar school environment alongside enrichment opportunities, leadership activities and preparation for university, apprenticeships and employment.

This route may suit students who:

  • Enjoy academic study
  • Want to keep a broad range of future options open
  • Are considering university or degree apprenticeships
  • Prefer a school-based setting

Further Education College

Colleges offer a wide range of academic, vocational and technical qualifications.

This route may suit students who:

  • Prefer practical learning
  • Want access to specialist facilities
  • Are interested in a particular industry sector
  • Prefer a more independent environment

Local colleges often offer vocational qualifications, T Levels, apprenticeships and higher-level pathways.

T Levels

T Levels are technical qualifications that combine classroom learning with industry experience.

Students spend most of their time studying and complete a substantial industry placement as part of the programme. T Levels are designed to help students prepare for skilled employment, apprenticeships and higher education.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships allow students to earn a salary while gaining qualifications and workplace experience.

An apprenticeship includes:

  • Paid employment
  • On-the-job training
  • Off-the-job learning and study
  • A nationally recognised qualification

Apprenticeships are available across a wide range of sectors and can lead to higher and degree-level study.

Other Routes

Some students may choose:

  • Specialist training providers
  • Supported learning programmes
  • Supported internships
  • Employment with accredited training

These options can provide valuable opportunities depending on a student's individual needs, circumstances and career goals.

Explore Local Providers

Students are encouraged to research and visit a range of providers before making decisions. Potential local options include:

  • The Corsham Sixth
  • Wiltshire College & University Centre
  • Bath College
  • Sheldon Sixth Form
  • Hardenhuish Sixth Form
  • Melksham Oak Sixth Form
  • St Laurence School Sixth Form
  • Specialist training providers
  • Apprenticeship employers

Attending open events provides an excellent opportunity to compare courses, facilities, support, enrichment opportunities and learning environments. Most events take place during the first 2 terms of the academic year.

Questions to Ask at an Open Evening

Visiting a range of providers can help you make an informed choice.

Consider asking:

  • What are the entry requirements?
  • What subjects, modules or units will I study?
  • How will I be assessed?
  • What support is available?
  • What enrichment opportunities are offered?
  • What work experience or industry links are available?
  • Where do students progress after completing the course?
  • What transport options are available?
  • Does the learning environment feel right for me?

How Parents and Carers Can Help

Parents and carers play an important role in supporting young people as they make decisions about their future.

You can help by:

  • Attending open evenings together
  • Encouraging your child to research multiple pathways
  • Discussing interests, strengths and aspirations
  • Keeping an open mind about different routes
  • Helping them understand application deadlines
  • Encouraging them to make use of careers guidance opportunities

The best decisions are usually made when students have explored a wide range of options and discussed them with trusted adults.

Students have access to:
