Independent Study
Becoming an Independent Learner
At Corsham Sixth, we are committed to helping students become confident, resilient and independent learners. The transition from GCSEs to post-16 study brings greater opportunities, freedom and responsibility, and we support students in developing the skills they need to thrive both academically and personally.
Throughout their time in the sixth form, students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, manage their time effectively and develop positive study habits that will prepare them for success beyond school.
Developing the Skills for Success
Our pastoral and academic programmes place a strong emphasis on independent learning and personal growth. Through our tutorial programme, Core curriculum and wider sixth form experience, students are supported in developing the skills and strategies needed to become effective learners.
We use a range of approaches, including the VESPA Mindset model and PiXL Post-16 Independence, to help students understand how they learn best and how they can maximise their potential.
The VESPA model focusses on five key areas that underpin success:
- Vision – setting goals and maintaining motivation
- Effort – developing productive study habits
- Systems – organising workload and managing time effectively
- Practice – refining revision and learning techniques
- Attitude – building confidence, resilience and a positive mindset
These skills not only support academic achievement but also help prepare students for university, apprenticeships and future careers.
A Dedicated Study Environment
Our purpose-built sixth form centre provides students with a high-quality learning environment where they can study independently, collaborate with peers and access support when needed.
The sixth form centre is open from 7.30am until 6.00pm, offering flexible study opportunities throughout the school day. Students also have access to a suite of laptops and dedicated study spaces designed to support independent research and focused learning.
Preparing for the Future
Independent learning is one of the most important skills students develop during their sixth form journey. By taking responsibility for their studies, managing competing demands and developing effective learning strategies, students leave Corsham Sixth well prepared for the expectations of higher education, apprenticeships and employment.
Our aim is that every student develops the confidence, organisation and self-motivation needed to become a successful lifelong learner.
