Science Introduction
Introduction from Peter Robards
Team Leader

At Corsham School we aim to provide pupils with the knowledge that science is not an esoteric subject, but that science has a real relevance to the outside work.
Our focus is on experiential learning, drawing from pupils’ own experiences to explain much of the world about us.

Specifically in our teaching we aim:
  • To present science as an exciting imaginative and appealing sphere of human endeavour in which everybody can participate regardless of their genre, ethnic origin, class and / or
  • general ability
  • To enable the learner to know and understand scientific concepts and principles
  • To allow pupils to acquire scientific competencies, including methods of exploration and testing of ideas; and know when and how to use science in a positive way. They should be able to communicate with others, using appropriate technology
The aims of the Science Team are to enable pupils to develop:
  1. Their competence as learners through increasing autonomy in their learning skills and self confidence in their approach to work
  2. Their skills in numeracy, graphicacy and IT capability
  3. Their appreciation of the impact of science on their environment, including their own and others’ health, technological applications and different cultures
  4. An awareness of the nature of science and the range of ethical issues that scientific discovery and technological development bring with them
  5. Their skills of scientific enquiry, including observation, measurement, safe working investigation, problem solving and evaluation
  6. Their ability to work with others and respect their views
  7. Their respect for the natural environment and carte for living things
  8. Their enjoyment of scientific work
  9. Their knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas at a level appropriate to further career aspirations
  10. The basic science understanding needed to be effective and informed citizens
  11. A broad and balanced understanding of science from the disciplines of biology, chemistry, physics, earth science and astronomy
  12. An understanding of the links between different science disciplines and between science and other curriculum areas through an integrated approach
